Expertise activity - Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS)

Result

Two short-term experts (110 working days) have been recruited for the second phase of the cost-benefit analysis (CBA) on the implementation of satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS) in Africa.

The experts have been providing support to the AFCAC in its role, under the supervision of the AUC, of carrying out the remaining tasks of the previous EU-funded project implemented by the EU DEL to AU (TA to AU/ISM). These tasks relate to: Task 1. Governance and institutional issues and to Task 2. Investigate the feasibility of African SBAS/GNSS technology and risk assessment.

The Study was completed in September 2024.

On 23-24 October 2024, a stakeholder validation workshop of the phase II was organised. The SBAS CBA Phase II Stakeholder Validation Workshop welcomed a good participation with 106 Participants connected via zoom from AU Member States, regional organizations, and key partners related to the SBAS domain (EAC, COMESA, ECOWAS), and international organizations (ICAO, IATA, ASECNA, SATNAV JPO, EASA).

The meeting provided recommendations concerning the institutionalization and technology transfer requirements and options for SBAS Implementation in Africa.

Following the incorporation of the comments made during the workshop in the SBAS final report by the expert team, the AU Commission and the AFCAC are requested to submit the outcome of the continental CBA Study on SBAS for consideration by the AU Policy Organs.

The final report is expected by Q1 2025.
